The J IPC is a power converter for controlling heater loads that previously required atransformer (either a variable transformer or a combination of transformer and thyristorpower unit).It functions in such a way that it can effectively be thought of as an electronic transformer with a pulsed DC output voltage.It combines the advantages of conventional variable transformers, such as amplitude controland sinusoidal supply loading, with the advantages of thyristor power switches, suchas current limiting, load monitoring, underlying control loops and so on.There is no electrical isolation between the supply voltage and the load voltage.The converter is suitable for all those applications where substantial resistive loads haveto be switched. Thanks to the amplitude control (i.e. the current drawn from the supply isalways sinusoidal), synchronous clock controls (as for burst-firing operation) or powerfactorcompensation networks (to compensate for phase-control reactive power) are not required.
